Becoming a foster carer is one of the most rewarding things you can do. By offering a safe, stable, and loving home, you can change the life of a child or young person who needs support. But we know that many people stop themselves before they even start because they’re unsure whether they’re eligible to foster.

At Foster for East Midlands Councils (FFEMC), we want to reassure you, there is no “typical” foster carer. People from all walks of life can apply, and most people who think they can’t, actually can.

Basic requirements to foster

To become a foster carer with Foster for East Midlands Councils, you need to meet a few essential requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have a spare bedroom for a child or young person (if you don’t, you may still foster children aged 0–2 years)
  • Have enough time, energy, and stability to care for a child full-time
  • Live permanently in the UK with the right to remain

Beyond these basics, your circumstances, personality, and willingness to learn will shape your fostering journey.
