When Carl and his wife tied the knot, they made a heartfelt decision that would shape their lives forever. Instead of starting a family of their own, they chose to dedicate their home and hearts to children in need of stability and care.

“We knew from the beginning there were many children out there who needed a safe place to grow up,” Carl explained. “So, we chose fostering.”

In 2017, once they had a little more time and space in their lives, they were officially approved as foster carers. Since then, Carl and his wife have supported children through long-term placements, offering consistency and love where it’s needed most.

Though they initially planned to care for teenagers, they’ve mainly fostered primary school-aged children. Their first placement stayed with them until the age of 21 and even asked them to become grandparents to her child, a moment Carl describes as one of the most meaningful in their fostering journey.

“It was really emotional,” he recalled. “That kind of connection reminds you just how important this role is.”

Now, they care for two children who are likely to remain with them into adulthood. Carl speaks openly about the challenges fostering can bring, but also about the deep sense of reward it offers.

“Some days are tough, but the rewards far outweigh the struggles,” he said. “Whether a child remains in care or returns home, it's all about what’s best for them and helping them reach a positive outcome.”

“Go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose. Even if it turns out not to be the right fit, you’ll have learned something along the way. But if it is for you, it’ll be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made.”

Cllr Paul Hezelgrave, Lead Council’s Cabinet Member for Foster for East Midlands Councils said:

Carl and his family embody the true spirit of community and care. Choosing to open their home to children in need shows extraordinary compassion and commitment. Fostering transforms lives not only for the children but for the carers too and we are proud to support carers like Carl who make such a profound difference. Their dedication reminds us all that a stable, loving home is the foundation every child deserves.
