If you’re beginning to explore fostering and want to understand how it works locally, attending a fostering information event is one of the most helpful places to start. Foster for East Midlands Councils (FFEMC) is a partnership between Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council. The Hub was created to recruit and support more foster carers across the region, helping more children stay within their own communities, schools and networks.

What are fostering information events?

These free sessions, held both online and in person, offer a clear and welcoming introduction to fostering with your local council. Whether you’re curious, researching your options or ready to take the next step, the events are designed for anyone who wants to understand what fostering involves.

What can I expect at a fostering information event?

You’ll be welcomed by members of the Foster for East Midlands Councils team, who explain how the session works and answer questions throughout. Events usually begin with an overview of the different types of fostering, such as short-term, long-term, emergency and respite care, as well as the needs of children and young people across the East Midlands. You’ll also hear about the training, financial support and ongoing help available to foster carers. Many sessions include current foster carers who share their own experiences, offering an honest insight into the realities of fostering.

Can I ask questions during the event?

Absolutely. You can ask about eligibility, the assessment process, fostering alongside work, matching children with carers or anything specific to your circumstances. Staff and experienced foster carers are on hand to offer clear, practical guidance.

Can I attend with a child?

Yes, you can. Foster for East Midlands Councils embraces a family atmosphere and understands that your children may need to attend with you. Events are welcoming and suitable for families.

Do I need to commit after attending?

No. These events are designed to inform, not pressure. If you feel ready, you can register your interest, request a call-back or take an information pack. If you’re not ready to move forward, you can simply take the information away and think about it.

How else can I learn about fostering for my council?

If you prefer a private conversation, you can contact the FFEMC team by phone or email. The website also provides detailed information on who can foster, the support available, allowances and upcoming events. You can also complete an online enquiry form to register your interest or request further information. Staff regularly attend community venues and local events, offering additional opportunities to talk informally.
