When Dianne first started fostering with Derby City Council, she began by providing emergency short breaks. Eight years later, her fostering journey has developed in ways she never expected.

Dianne initially cared for teenagers before moving on to fostering siblings who are now living with her long term and have been part of her family for several years.

For Dianne, one of the most memorable parts of fostering has been seeing the difference it can make to a child’s life.

One young person Dianne cared for wanted to return home. Although there were challenges along the way, Dianne supported her and worked with her towards that goal. Eventually, she was able to return home, and Dianne has continued to keep in touch with her and her family.

Dianne still enjoys hearing how she is getting on, seeing photographs and receiving birthday cards. She has even been invited to visit the family.

“It is very memorable for someone going back home,” says Dianne.

Would Dianne recommend fostering?

Her answer is simple: yes.

“I would say do it. There’s lots of challenging times, but there’s a lot of rewards as well.”

Dianne also recognises that becoming a foster carer is a process. For children coming into foster care, their new carer is initially a stranger, so it is important that they have time to get to know them and feel safe.

For Dianne, the rewards make it all worthwhile.

“If you can help a child, that is something massive and positive.”

And the moment when she sees a child flourish is, for her, what makes fostering so special.

Could you make a difference to a child’s life?
