Supported lodgings is a form of accommodation and support for young people aged 16 and over who are unable to live with their birth families. It provides more than just a place to stay, it offers stability, guidance, and a supportive adult presence at a key stage in a young person’s life.

It is delivered locally by your local authority, though Foster for East Midlands Councils in partnership with organisations including Host the Future, who help recruit and support hosts.

What is supported lodgings?

In a supported lodgings arrangement, a young person lives in the home of a carefully approved host. The host provides a safe and stable environment along with practical and emotional support.

This can include help with:

  • Learning independent living skills (such as cooking and budgeting)
  • Education, training, or employment goals
  • Building confidence and routine
  • Emotional support and encouragement
  • Having a consistent, trusted adult in the home

Unlike foster care for younger children, supported lodgings is specifically designed to help older teenagers and young adults gradually move towards independence in a structured and supportive way.

You can read more about the service on the supported lodging web page.

Who is supported lodgings for?

Supported lodgings can make a significant difference for young people who may be in situations such as:

  • Leaving care and preparing for independent living
  • Experiencing family breakdown
  • Facing or at risk of homelessness
  • Being an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child adjusting to life in the UK

The aim is to provide stability at a time when young people may otherwise have limited support networks.

The role of a host

A supported lodgings host is someone who offers a spare room in their home and a supportive environment for a young person.

Hosts do not need professional qualifications or prior experience in social care. Instead, they are expected to offer patience, encouragement, and a willingness to help a young person develop life skills and confidence.

Hosts are supported through:

  • Full initial training
  • Ongoing professional support
  • Financial allowances to help with costs

This structure ensures hosts are supported in their role and can access guidance whenever needed.
