When Hayley first considered fostering, she was a single mum with a young son about to start primary school, and she wondered whether her age and circumstances would count against her. More than 16 years later, she knows those doubts couldn’t have been further from the truth.
Hayley said: "I had a spare bedroom and a lot of love and time to give, so I thought, 'Why not?"
Although she had doubts about whether she would be considered, Hayley says those worries quickly disappeared.
"I didn't know whether I was too young or whether being a single carer would go against me, but it didn't. About nine months later we welcomed our first child."
Hayley has supported children through some of the most important moments of their lives, proving that foster carers come from all walks of life. Over the past 16 years, Hayley has experienced many rewarding moments, but says some of the greatest achievements are often the simplest.
"There are loads of little things, but the biggest win is when a child starts to trust you, listens to your advice and you see them growing into themselves."
One moment stands out above all others. Hayley cared for a young person for more than 10 years before they recently moved into independent living.
"She said to me only a couple of months ago, 'You were right. All the things that you said to me, you were right.' As any parent will tell you, hearing that is just amazing."
For anyone thinking about fostering, Hayley has one clear message.
"Just do it. Just enquire. Ask the questions. No question is silly. If you know someone who fosters, ask them about their experience, or ask to speak to a foster carer when you make your enquiry. Nobody really knows what fostering is like unless you do it."
Councillor Paul Hezelgrave, Lead Cabinet Member for Fostering for the East Midlands Councils, said:
Hayley's story shows that foster carers come from all walks of life and that making an enquiry is the first step. If you've ever considered fostering, don't rule yourself out. By opening your home and heart, you could make a lasting difference to a local child's life while receiving support every step of the way.
Foster for East Midlands Councils is encouraging more people to find out whether fostering could be right for them. Whether you're single, married, in a relationship or have children of your own, what matters most is your ability to provide a safe, stable and caring home for a child or young person.
