Being in foster care often comes with a stigma. Many young people feel judged or labelled as “different,” and those assumptions can lead to bullying and misunderstanding. But the reality is much more complex. Being in care doesn’t define who someone is, and it certainly doesn’t make them any less capable than anyone else.
For some, entering foster care can be both frightening and life-changing. Imagine being six years old and, for the first time, feeling what a real home is like. That sense of safety and belonging can feel almost unreal, like something out of a storybook. Yet, those early days can also be filled with anxiety, worrying about rules, and fearing punishment simply because everything is new and unfamiliar.
Trust is one of the biggest challenges. When a child is moved from the only environment they’ve known into a completely different one, it’s hard to feel secure again. That difficulty doesn’t just disappear over time, it can affect relationships and confidence well into adulthood.
Despite this, foster care can also bring moments of joy and healing. Something as simple as their own birthday party can mean everything to a child who has never experienced this before. These moments help build a sense of normality and show that they are valued.
There’s a common misconception that children in care are troublemakers or unlikely to succeed. In reality, they are just as capable as any other young person. Yes, they may face additional struggles, but those challenges don’t define their potential. Many grow into strong, empathetic individuals, often using their experiences to support others going through similar situations.
For some, foster care isn’t just a chapter, it’s what made growing up possible. It can provide safety, stability, and opportunities that may not have existed otherwise. And while the journey isn’t always easy, it can lead to finding something incredibly important: a place to call home.
