Emergency fostering
Change a life, help support a future
Change a life, help support a future
Some babies, children and young people need foster care in an emergency – this means that they need someone to care for them with very short notice and can be at any time of day or night. It may be that their home is unsafe, there’s no one suitable to care for them or they are at risk of immediate harm.
The nature of this urgency means that emergency foster carers must be flexible, prepared, calm and welcoming.
Emergency foster care ensures that a child is kept safe whilst a plan is made for who is best placed to offer them a more settled home – they may go back home, to another family member or stay in foster care.
This is another type of fostering that can work alongside other commitments such as full-time employment.
